Through the dreary winter at Fort Clatsop,
the Corps battled the elements, made gallons of salt from the
sea, sewed more than 300 pair of moccasins and spent hours catching
up on their journals. With the first sign of spring 1806, the Corps
left the encampment, signing over the fort to the Clatsop Indians
with whom they had traded during winter.
