Through the dreary winter at Fort Clatsop, the Corps battled the elements, made gallons of salt from the sea, sewed more than 300 pair of moccasins and spent hours catching up on their journals.With the first sign of spring 1806, the Corps left the encampment, signing over the fort to the Clatsop Indians with whom they had traded during winter.

The group was in a hurry to get home, lured by the prospects of civilization as they knew iit, and rejoining friends and family. They traveled upstream on the Columbia, pausing briefly to explore the Willamette River, and overland to the Nez Perce villages. Waiting impatiently for snowmelt in the Rockies, the Corps provided medical services to the local people.
