Volume Nine is in production and set for release early 2002
Volume Eight will follow shortly thereafter.
The national observance of
the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition provides
a rare opportunity for all Americans to rediscover the science
and cultural history of the land now known as the western United
States.
CarTours, Lewis & Clark "Trail
of Discovery," a series of ten (10) hour-long audio driving tours
covering all eleven trail-states, addresses the following objectives
of The National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council:
- Commemorative projects to encourage
participation by the largest possible number of citizens in
ways that connect them physically, visually and intellectually
with the Expedition and its historical sites and acclaim the
contributions and goodwill of the native people who were instrumental
in it's successful completion.
-
Preservation projects
which result in the increased preservation of the National
Lewis and Clark Historic Trail and create a lasting legacy
after the end of the observances.
-
Educational programs
that provide an enhanced understanding and appreciation of
the fact that the Expedition was an epic event that shaped
the history of the United States and promote, especially among
young people, the spirit of mutual discovery, teamwork, diplomacy
and steadfastness of purpose that characterized the Expedition
and ensured its success.
"This series will be a one
of a kind traveling companion enabling travelers to participate
in their own unique experience of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
during and long after the Bicentennial." Donald F. Striker (NPS)
Superintendent, Ft. Clatsop NHM
Approach
A series of self-guided audio driving tours, designed to link
the myriad local commemorative and cultural sites and educational
projects along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail into
a comprehensive, cross-country, "Trail of Discovery." Each volume,
with its hour-long, NPR-like audio driving tour, "web-enhanced"
CD-ROM content and associated booklet will connect the land and
the present day traveler to the circumstances and people encountered
by the expedition. The programs play on standard car stereos and
personal computers. The audio will be available on audiocassette
and as sound-files for Internet purchase.
The CarTours Foundation wishes
to work closely with Native American tribes and accurately tell
the story also from the perspective of the people who discovered
Lewis and Clark.
Through interpretation, interviews
and Native American voices, CarTours will give listeners a rich
understanding of what the land looked like 200 years ago and how
the expedition shaped what the visitor sees today. Each production
will also include narration with period music underscores, journal
readings, reenactments and authentic sound effects. Scripts for
the Lewis & Clark "Trail of Discovery," programs will be reviewed
for accuracy by the National Trail Heritage Foundation, Native
American tribes who choose to participate, Ft. Clatsop National
Monument staff and others.
The natural sciences and
native cultures encountered by the Expedition will be re-discovered
by the listeners. As they drive, modern travelers will be transported
back in time, as each episode interprets the cultural and scientific
significance of corresponding trail-sections. CarTours will further
enrich the visitors experience by drawing attention to themes
presented at regional Visitor, Discovery and Cultural Centers
along the way and by including some lesser-known stories of the
Expedition: the Native American perspective, York's story and
the scientific and military significance.
Plan
The project schedule calls for overall design refinements and
project development through the fall of 2001. To stimulate interest
in the project, the first volume to be produced, "The Final Steps"
will be released in the summer of 2001. Assuming full and timely
funding, the production schedule will enable CarTours to release
the planned ten-volume audio tour guide, covering all 11 trail-states,
in May of 2004, to coincide with the beginning of the national
celebration.
To coincide with as many
local activities and sites as possible and meet public demand
for everything Lewis & Clark, when completed each volume will
be released as an individual title during the production period,
2002 - 2004. A deluxe-boxed set will be introduced in St. Louis
in May 2004. One hundred complete sets will be donated to the
National Trail Heritage Foundation for educational and promotional
purposes.
Funding
The provisional budget for production, manufacturing and distribution
of this multi-state, multi-media project is more than $2.5 million
over three years. We are building partnerships with federal and
state tourism, parks, highways and transportation departments
and other interested agencies. Furthermore, we believe this is
an appropriate project for sponsorship by relevant corporate entities
such as General Motors, Texaco, MasterCard, ATT wireless, Kodak,
etc.
In-kind services, volunteers
and financial support are all necessary to move this project forward.
Primary underwriters will receive prominent mention on packaging.
In addition to the awareness provided and activating their support
of historic and cultural preservation, sponsors will make possible
an unparalleled interpretive and educational resource commemorating
Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery.
Conclusion
Beyond addressing the stated objectives of the Bicentennial Council,
the "Trail of Discovery," series also answers the need expressed
by interpreters around the country who desire a way to tie the
diverse elements of the bicentennial into a coherent road-trip,
accessible to the largest number of people.
In addition to preserving
a rich deposit of oral history, CarTours', "Trail of Discovery,"
will be a lasting legacy, enabling visitors to rediscover the
Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail for many years to come.
With your help, the enduring educational value of these high quality
programs will continue long into the future.
The CarTours Foundation is
a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. All donations, grants and
proceeds are re-invested into this global project.
