Homeward Bound -- The Return Journey
Three CDs or audiocassettes in one package
Part One:
The Marias River
Meriwether Lewis' overland trek from Travellers Rest to Great
Falls with less than a dozen men, their exploration of the Marias
River and the party's disastrous encounter with Blackfeet warriors.
This route takes the visitor directly to Glacier National Park
and invites a partnership with that site.
Part Two:
The Yellowstone River
William Clark's historic hike down the Bitterroot Mountains, across
the Continental Divide to the navigable waters of the Yellowstone
River. Following this river, Clark's route was nearly identical
to the path of today's Interstates 90 & 94. Listeners will
be directed to the only sign of the expedition remaining today
- Clark's signature at Pompey's Pillar - learn about John Coleter's
later exploration and "discovery" of what is today Yellowstone
National Park. This route is seldom more than an hour from this
national treasure, inviting a similar partnership as that at Glacier
NP.
Part Three:
Headed Home
*Ordway's group goes back to Great Falls to get the cached supplies.
*The other two groups split off under the Sargents
*One group has horses stolen by the Crows, builds bull boats to
float down river & meet up with Clark.
*All members of the party reunite near present-day Newtown, ND
(Mandan-Hidatsa Reservation)
